Malama Kai Foundation - Stewardship of the Sea.

The Malama Kai Foundation, in partnership with the Hawaii Departments of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), has sponsored the Adopt-a-Buoy Program since 1991. Individuals and organizations make donations to the Adopt-a-Buoy Program through the Malama Kai Foundation to support the installation and maintenance of day-use mooring buoys around the State. The buoys are installed by trained volunteers at sites already approved for moorings to help minimize anchor damage to fragile coral reef areas. Contributors receive a certificate of adoption and, for donations over $500, are recognized on a plaque located at DLNR Headquarters in Honolulu.

Donors may specify the island for which they would like their contribution to apply. An adopted buoy will be placed at a site already approved for a mooring. Donors may pick which of these sites they want for their adopted buoy, but this will not give them any more right to use the mooring than any other user. The buoys are placed at heavily-used areas, and access to these buoys is on a first-come first-served basis.

There are three classes of contribution:

Butterfly Fish Class - Donation of $250
Your donation will pay for the mooring materials and installation of one mooring. You will receive a pewter pin and a certificate of adoption.

Triggerfish Class - Donation of $500
Your donation will pay for the installation, monitoring and maintenance of a buoy for one year. You will receive a pewter pin, certificate of adoption, and your name will appear on a recognition plaque at DLNR Headquarters.

Sea Turtle Class - Donation of $750
Your donation will pay for the materials, installation, monitoring and maintenance of a buoy for five years. You will receive a pewter pin, certificate of adoption, and your name will appear on a recognition plaque at DNLR Headquarters. If you want, your name will appear on the Malama Kai Foundation website, with a link to your webpage.
