Malama Kai Foundation web site.

Aloha and Welcome to the Big Island Reef Fund.

Our Mission:
Promote conservation and sustainable use of marine resources of the Island of Hawai`i.

Our Goals:

Leave the marine environment in a better state than we found it for our children and grand children.

Build support through private donations from ocean users to fund marine conservation, restoration and research projects.

Keep the Island of Hawai`i as a model in Marine Conservation.

A Marine Recreation and Conservation Alliance
The Big Island Reef Fund is a voluntary alliance of marine recreation operators and conservation organizations working to ensure that our island's coral reefs and coastal resources remain healthy for generations to come.

The Malama Kai Foundation and the Big Island Reef Fund work in partnership to support coastal and marine conservation projects on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Since 1991, the Malama Kai Foundation has supported and managed many coastal and marine conservation programs throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and is recognized as the lead organization relating to the statewide system of day-use mooring buoys.  On the Big Island of Hawaii, Malama Kai Foundation has been very active with its work in day-use mooring buoys, public education and outreach, marine science education and research, and community-based management of coastal and marine resources.

Coral Reefs in Hawai‘i
The Hawaiian Islands are one of the finest diving and fishing areas in the world. Our coastal waters are blessed with miles of exquisite coral reefs, and more than one quarter of the islands’ marine life is found nowhere else on Earth. Yet Hawai‘i ranks almost last among states in funding for aquatic management. The result is a continuing decline in our fragile marine environment from a variety of threats, including:

Coastal over-development.

Pollution and marine debris.

Over-fishing.

Alien species, particularly coral-killing algae.

Inappropriate anchoring.

Working Together Is the Solution
In response to these threats, the marine recreation industry and conservation organizations have joined forces in an effort to safeguard the coral reefs and coastal areas that provide habitat for Hawaii ’s fish, turtles, dolphins, and other marine life—and you can help! Your contribution to the Big Island Reef Fund can revitalize the health of our coral reef ecosystems. The more you give, the more you get back. This is the gift that keeps on giving.

Get Involved / How to contribute
By donating funds to the Big Island Reef Fund, you will greatly assist us in protecting marine wildlife and their habitat, to be enjoyed now and by future generations.
