Malama Kai Foundation - Stewardship of the Sea.

 


Malama Kai Foundation’s Board of Directors is made up of seven individuals who serve as volunteers on the Board and as officers.

M. Carolyn Stewart: President and Treasurer - Ms. Stewart is the Vice President and a principal consultant for Marine and Coastal Solutions International, Inc., a small consulting firm specializing in planning, management and policy analysis for marine and coastal resources. Between 1991 and 1999, she worked as a planning and policy analyst for the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program. She has worked on numerous coastal and marine resources management projects locally and abroad, for government agencies and international organizations. Ms. Stewart is a co-author of the Hawaii Ocean Resources Management Plan.

Teri Leicher - Ms. Leicher is an owner of Jack’s Diving Locker, a marine recreation company in Kailua-Kona. Teri has been active in coastal and reef protection issues in West Hawaii for over 20 years, and played a key role in the development of the day use mooring buoy system to protect Hawaii’s coral reefs from anchor damage, and in the installation and maintenance of the mooring buoys along the coast of West Hawaii.

Lisa Choquette - Ms. Choquette is an owner of Dive Makai, a dive charter boat operation in Kailua-Kona. She is extremely knowledgeable about the nearshore resources of Hawaii and has taken an active role in resources management issues in West Hawaii for over 25 years.

David Tarnas: Vice-President and Secretary - Mr. Tarnas is the former State Representative for the North Kona-South Kohala district of the Big Island (1994-1998). While in office, he served as the Chair of the House Committee on Ocean and Marine Resources. Prior to elected office, Mr. Tarnas was the Sea Grant Extension Service agent for West Hawaii. He currently serves as the President and a principal consultant for Marine and Coastal Solutions International, Inc., a small consulting firm specializing in planning, management and policy analysis for marine and coastal resources.

George Wilkins - Mr. Wilkins, a nuclear physicist and retired research scientist with the University of Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, has been leading the search for freshwater sources along the Hawaii coast using aerial infrared photography. He helped introduce slant drilling for use in the Hawaii shoreline environment for underground access from a Keahole Point shoreline facility to an underwater site 60+ feet depth just offshore to be used as conduits for cables and pipes. George worked on a proposed underwater muon-neutrino telescope and a wide variety of resource assessment projects. He helped with the technical development of pin moorings for the day-use mooring buoy project.

Greg Howeth - Mr. Howeth is the owner and President of Lahaina Divers Inc., former President and current member of the Hawaiian Islands Recreational Scuba Association (HIRSA), former director and current member of MCBOAT, and chairman of the Small Passenger Vessel Sub Committee for the Hawaii Operational Safety Team (HOST). He has been instrumental in installing and maintaining the day use moorings throughout Maui County including the islands of Lanai, Molokini, and Maui and has been an advocate for the marine environment in Hawaii for more than 15 years.
